14K Gold Filled Adoption is Love Bracelet

Filed under: General — Sunfluer at 4:50 pm on Thursday, August 30, 2007

Adoption is Love in 14K gold filled  Newly created is the Adoption is Love bracelet in 14K gold filled beads.  What is really great about this design is it can be completely customized to suit.  Select Swarovski crystals in any combination to celebrate what's most meaningful to you.  In this sample, I created the bracelet for me celebrating the adoption of my two children.  I chose garnet for January and aquamarine crystals for March.  I added three sterling silver charms.  A ladybug charm for China where my daughter was born.  The mask charm for my son who is African American.  BTW:  The mask charm would work well for adoptions from Ethiopia.  And, a heart charm with the word "love' inside it.

It's a very unique piece like all of the designs I create.  The gold and silver look great together.  It enhances the artistic appeal of the design.  No two designs are alike because it's made to order.  Each adoption experience is unique and the design certainly reflects it.  This bracelet makes a wonderful, thoughtful and lasting gift.  It can become a family heirloom.

Orders for this design need to be made in advance.  I don't keep a large stock of the supplies to make the bracelet because of the uniqueness.  Ordering the bracelet early ensures the customer will receive it when desired.  Be sure to check out the design at my website SunfluersJewelryDesigns.com  You can see the great list of sterling silver charms to custom select.  Three charms come with each design.  If a customer wants more than three, additional charms only cost $10.00 each.  Given the fact, it's a totally personal design, it's a good value.

Sunfluer’s Jewelry Designs Offline for Several Days

Filed under: General — Sunfluer at 2:12 pm on Tuesday, May 15, 2007

Last Saturday, 5/12/07, I attempted to do some updates to the website.  To my chagrin, I found I was unable to access the back panel.  Why?  Ipowerweb which happens to be my hosting provider, took it's servers offline.  Ipowerweb in it's infinite wisdom didn't think it necessary to alert customers such as Sunfluer's Jewelry Designs.  My mere website being only a drop of byte space in cyberspace was left sinking without a raft, paddle or life preserver.  My business was held hostage with no means to check the status of orders or the ability to let my customers know of the outage.  As it turned out, IPowerweb had my business and I'm sure a host of others (no pun intended) offline for days.  In my case, it was a bit or byte over 84 hours!  Ouch!  That hurts.

When hosting providers decide to sunset their servers it leaves small businesses like mine way out on the proverbial limb.  Not only can we not access our websites, we are unable to get to the data.  It's a strangle hold on web based virtual stores.  It is unacceptable and goes way against my ability to provide top service.

It is my intention to search for a hosting provider that cares more about their customers.  It is my hope that such an entity exists.  For at the very least, the webhost will offer an explanation and courtesy when the servers are coming down, for what reason and for how long.

My apologies go out to all of my customers who attempted to check on the status of their order or place new ones.  I hope I didn't lose you.  I'm still here rambling on, working on new designs and finding new and improved ways to add to my catalogue and business.

Introducing original, signed art greeting cards…

New to the Sunfluer’s Jewelry Designs catalogue are original art greeting cards.  Two designs are currently available with a peace theme.  The cards are beautifully drawn and signed by artist, Barbara Giordano owner/designer of SunfluersJewelryDesigns.com  The set of 12 cards with envelopes can be purchased from the website.  Each original art card is printed on high quality, glossy card stock.  The inside is blank so a personal expression can be written.

New jewelry designs are in the catalogue.  A special Grandma necklace on sterling silver rolo chain is part of the collection.  Each necklace is custom made with Swarovski birthstone color heart charms.

More rainbow pride design selection are available.  In addition, customers are offered more functions on the website.  Our customers can now create wish lists to keep or send to family and friends.  And, the tell a friend function has been a welcomed, useful tool.

The adoption designs are a favorite.  In response to demand, the designs include African American, China, Ethiopia, Guatamala, Russia and USA.

More products will be added to the website.  Be sure to stop by and tell your friends.  SunfluersJewelryDesigns.com understands one size or style doesn’t fit all.  Custom requests are welcomed.

Gold Filled, Sterling Silver Care and Information by Barbara Giordano

What is Gold Filled Metal?

Gold filled metal is made by bonding a thin layer of gold to a base metal (either sterling silver or brass) using high heat and pressure.   The result is a metal that is less expensive than solid gold but much more durable than gold plated.

The gold filled wire I use for my designer jewelry is 14/20 gold filled (meaning 1/20th 14 karat).  Here the 1/20 refers to the ratio of the 14 karat (plumb) gold layer to the base metal layer by weight, which is 5%.

What is the Difference Between Gold Filled and Gold Plated?

To gold plate a metal you place the metal into a special solution that contains gold.  The metal is then electrically charged for an instant.  The electrochemical reaction creates a microscopic thin layer of gold on the surface of the metal.  This very thin layer can be worn off by rubbing or through body oils.  Over time the electric charge will wear off and the gold layer may flake off in large sections.

In contrast, the gold filled layer is about 100 times thicker than a plated surface.  The high heat and pressure used to bond the gold creates a layer that does not rub off, wear off, or flake off easily.

How Durable is Gold Filled Metal?

Gold filled metal is very durable.  Unlike gold plated jewelry you can wear gold filled jewelry every day.

Will Gold Filled “Turn”?

When people ask the above question,  they are usually wanting to know one of two things:

(a)  Will the gold filled tarnish?  Yes.  All metals will tarnish over time.

Tarnish is the sulphur in the air interacting with the surface of the metal.  It can be removed in a number of ways.  For instance:  A soft cloth and/or a soft bristled tooth brush with mild soap and water should be enough to remove surface tarnish.

(b)  Will the gold filled turn my skin green?  No, it should not.

Gold filled has a thick enough layer of gold to protect most people from this reaction.

I Can’t Wear Anything Less Than 14 karat pure (plumb) gold.  Can I Wear Gold Filled?

It depends on the individual.  Many people with known metal sensitivities have been able to wear gold filled jewelry without any problems.

Why Does Sterling Silver Tarnish?

Keeping your sterling silver jewelry tarnish free may seem to be a daunting task. Some of us may have experienced our sterling silver jewelry tarnish overnight.  If it does begin to tarnish and you catch it in its early stages, you can easily remedy the situation.  In just a few easy steps, you can help prevent sterling silver jewelry from tarnishing.

The first thing to understand is sterling silver tarnishes typically by things that we do/not do or wear.  Perfume, colognes, lotions, sweaty skin and hair products can all be contributing factors to turning your shiny jewelry to tarnish.  If the jewelry is removed and the residue isn’t wiped off, the chemicals will contribute to the tarnishing process.  Harsh chemicals from dishwater detergents, cholrine and the like will tarnish sterling silver.  If sterling silver is exposed to the air, left unprotected when not being worn, tarnish becomes inevitable.

What Can I Do To Keep My Sterling Silver Shiny?

A few easy steps will ensure your sterling to be as brilliant as the day it was purchased.  Before you put any jewelry on, be sure any lotions and/or perfumes are absorbed into your skin.  Apply all hair products, especially airspray, before you put the jewelry on. Remove your jewelry before swimming, an invigorating workout or prior to bedtime.  When you remove your jewelry at the end of your day, take a couple of minutes to wipe off with a jewelry cloth (go here to purchase one:  http://www.sunfluersjewelrydesigns.com/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=19) or use an old t-shirt or flannel shirt.  The jewelry cloth is preferable because it’s two sided:  The inside rouge is for cleaning off the dull residue and the outside cloth for buffing.  It’s the only one I will use for wiping clean my own jewelry pieces and use prior to shipping your purchase.  Never use tissues or paper towels for cleaning silver.  These products will scratch the jewelry which will detract from the beauty of the pieces.

After the jewelry is wiped clean, store it in an airtight container, such as a zip lock baggie (included with your purchase), a cloth bag and/or a airtight jewelry box. The less air and light your silver is exposed to when you aren’t wearing it, the less tarnish will occur making it easy to have shiny jewelry each and everytime you’re ready to wear it.

These few preventative steps, can easily keep your sterling silver jewelry from becoming dull and tarnished. Taking time to keeping your jewelry clean after wearing it, storing it away from light and air is all that’s needed to cut down on tarnish significantly.

The Magnet Trick

How do I know if my sterling silver is truly sterling silver?  In other words, am I getting what I’m paying for?  Sterling silver will not attach or attract to a magnet.  A magnet attracts iron, nickel, cobalt and combinations of those metals but not sterling silver.  Go ahead and try it on your own sterling silver jewelry.

On the air with Whoopi!

Filed under: General — Sunfluer at 8:27 am on Monday, July 31, 2006

I woke up this morning hearing Whoopi Goldberg co-hosting on WKTU - 103.5 NY radio. The segment is called "feel good, shout out". Basically callers have a chance to shout out on the air good experiences, deeds they’ve done or experienced. Recently, a customer contacted me to share with me how much the Russia adoption bracelet she purchased 2 years ago helped her through the wait period. The customer further expressed they’re thinking about adoption #2 from Guatemala and will need another design. Whoppi and WKTU gave me the opportunity to talk about my design work and my personal experience. Thanks KTU!

A self portrait - Among the Sunflowers A self portrait - Among the Sunflowers

I’m back in school studying commercial art. The portrait here is from a class project. I actually started to teach myself to draw a year ago. I’ve learned much technique on my own but I’m gaining a much broader understanding as I study.

The new stuff happening on the website, is a gallery dedicated to my customers who’ve purchased the adoption design jewelry. It’s so touching to me to hear stories from other families waiting to adopt or after they’ve brought their child home. I can relate to the stories as only an adoptive parent understands.

I started making the adoption jewelry back in 2003 because I couldn’t find anything representing adoption.  And, I’m inspired by my personal experiences.

I’ve have so much personal joy making these special designs.  It’s such a wonderful feeling when a customer writes back to me after purchasing one of the adoption designs, how much having the piece helped them through the wait time.  All adoptive parents, especially the first time into the process, know the challenge of the waiting game.  I had no idea when I first started making the designs, how much the symbolism would offer comfort to a waiting parent.  On more then one occasion, I was told by a mom to be, having the bracelet to wear helped them feel connected to the child they’re waiting to bring home.  The jewelry is personal, tangible, a thing that can be looked at and felt by the expecting mother who waits to unite with the child who waits.  I know, I would’ve loved having a bracelet such as these while I was waiting to bring my daughter home.

It has taken me a while to find the words to express these thoughts and share it with whoever happens upon this blog.  All the jewelry I make is special but the adoption jewelry holds so much more, on such a deeper level.  I know when I’m making the adoption designs, I’m doing it not just for myself but for others who will find meaning in it, in a way only an adoptive parent can understand or anyone who is touched by adoption.  I’m looking for ideas to make adoption jewelry representing all connections in the triad and beyond.  Please add your comments to the blog. Your thoughts are welcomed here.

Half The Sky Auction Big Success!

Filed under: General — Sunfluer at 8:54 am on Wednesday, October 26, 2005

The Half the Sky Foundation fundraiser auction was a big success! Sunfluer’s Jewelry Designs raised $190.00 from the sale of selected designs from the adoption line of jewelry. It is my personal pleasure to help raise funds for a very worthwhile organization. HTS, a non-profit organization raises funds to help enhance the quality of life for children in China’s orphanages.
Thanks to all who participated in the auction and purchased my design work to aid HTS.

The State of New Orleans

Filed under: General — Sunfluer at 10:47 am on Friday, September 2, 2005

I had to put aside my art to blog about the horrible state of affairs going on in New Orleans.

The atrocity I see regarding the state of New Orleans and the people who suffer and remain is beyond comprehension. I can’t stop thinking about what will come of all the people waiting in desparation for the basic essentials to substain human life. Where is our government? Why is it taking so long to get the people out of the area and a place of refuge? I keep shaking my head in disbelief. The horrible situation must make our ancestors and forefathers spin in their graves.

When are the good people of the United States going to realize Bush never cared. Why is the “President” allowed to continue as commandor and chief? Bush has done an awful job overseeing our country. The only thing Bush and his people care about is the all mighty dollar and how much their stocks in oil are rising while hard working American citizens are being drained.

If the slow reaction of our govenment to Hurricane Katrina doesn’t finally wake up people out of their deep slumber regarding our government, I honestly don’t know what will. Our wonderful country is going down the tubes.

Recently, I started creating art with a different medium - sketching with pencils. Many creative people find they need more then one way to find expression. The sketching work is very relaxing and lends itself to opening channels for creativity. My favorites are sketching faces and fantasy.

Dressing up the blog a bit…

Filed under: General — Sunfluer at 8:21 pm on Friday, July 1, 2005

Ok, so I’m having a little fun dressing up my blog after neglecting it for far too long.  It’s a hoot setting it up in a way that reflects my personality.  Naturally, because I love gemstones so much and hooked into the metaphysical properties of them, I couldn’t help but to add a lunar phase calendar.  The moon controls the tides and the menstrual cycle with it’s 28 day orbit.

Currently, I’m working on a peyote stitch bracelet.  I love bead weaving although the work is very time consuming.  It could take days for me to complete a bracelet.  When I complete the bracelet, I’ll be sure to post a picture of it on this blog.  I’m not planning on placing it on my website for sale.  However, if a customer "must have it", who am I to refuse.

There’s a bead show coming up here.  It’s the Innovative Beads Show.  I’m going to try to get there because I’m sure to find loads of gemstone goodies.  It’s like a treasure hunt.  There are so many different vendors and the variety of gemstone beads are awesome.

I’ll be writing to this blog more often.  Check in from time to time and give me feedback on what you want to see and hear more about on here and SunfluersJewelryDesigns.com

Variety Added to Adoption Designs

Filed under: General — Sunfluer at 8:27 pm on Thursday, June 30, 2005

Variety is the spice of life. With that being said, I added the option for my customers to choose their own Swarvoski crystal color for the “Adoption is Love” and “In My Heart” designs. Adoption is such a personal experience it’s only natural to choose a color to a corresponding month that’s meaningful to the individual. As you all know, all of the jewely is designed and handcrafted by me :-) The adoption designs are especially close to my heart.

I just finished off a very hot summer type necklace. I envisioned walking along a beach at sunset while crafting this particular design. It’s a hot design with an “island” appeal to it, I think.

With a deep interest in the orphanges of China, I started a design line that expresses “China adoption love”. My beloved daughter, after all, was born in China back in 1998 which is definitely an inspiration behind this work. I decided I needed more so I connected with an organization that holds meaning for me called Half The Sky. Half the Sky was created to help enhance the quality of life for the children that live in China’s orphanges. I’m now working in partnership with Half the Sky. I’ve agreed to give a contribution of 10% of the proceeds from each sale of either the China adoption designs or “Adoption is Love”. I feel very excited about this new partnership.
I plan to start working on more adoption themed designs in the near future. I think as I start with the new beading projects, I’ll write more to this blog so stay posted.
Bye for now, Sunfluer aka Barbara :-)
